13/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - 710,000 migrants crossed EU's external borders between January and September 2015. On Tuesday 13 October, the European agency Frontex stated that over 710,000 migrants had crossed the EU's external borders during the first nine months of this year. In 2014, there were 282,000 entries into the EU. The Greek islands in the Aegean Sea are most affected by the arrivals, with 350,000 people having arrived on Lesbos since the start of the year. In the Eastern Mediterranean area, 49,000 arrivals were recorded in September. For Italy, 129,000 people have arrived in total since the start of 2015 - mainly Eritreans. In Hungary, 204,000 people have been recorded since the start of the year. Around 97,000 people (still not included in the official statistics) reportedly entered the EU via Croatia in the second half of September after Budapest closed Hungary's border. (SP)
