15/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU helps Hungary to deal with migrant influx. Through the civil protection mechanism of the EU, which was activated on Friday of last week, the EU has come to the support of Hungarian authorities overwhelmed by an unprecedented influx of nearly 150,000 migrants. Denmark, Bulgaria and Slovenia have already offered material support - tents, blankets, sheets - in response to Hungary's request for assistance. Other member states may also make resources available. The Commission is in close contact with the authorities in Budapest to coordinate the supply of aid, according to Christos Stylianides, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management. “The EU stands shoulder to shoulder with Hungary during these difficult times”, he said. The Hungarian authorities made a request for assistance on 28 June, with immediate responses from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. (AN)
