03/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - President Perez resigns on charges of corruption. On Thursday 3 September, Guatemala's President Otto Perez Molina resigned after a Guatemalan judge issued a warrant for his arrest. Perez's immunity from prosecution has been lifted. The European Union spoke of its “trust that the current corruption cases will be brought to justice impartially and fairly”, according to a press release from the spokesperson of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on Tuesday 1 September. Mogherini's spokesperson called on Guatemala's institutions “to facilitate a smooth transition to a new government which will take office in January 2016”. Parliamentary elections will take place in Guatemala on Sunday 6 September. (MB)
