Political groups of European Parliament want hearing with Cameron

Brussels, 03/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 3 September, the conference of the presidents of the political groups of the European Parliament decided by the unanimous vote of its members to approve the request of the leader of the Liberal group ALDE, Belgium's Guy Verhofstadt, to invite the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, to come before the EP to share his views on the United Kingdom's future in the European Union.

The Belgian Liberal put this request to the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, earlier this week (see EUROPE 11379). According to a source of the ALDE group, it was not possible to decide upon the date and details for a visit by Cameron, who has not yet replied, at Thursday's meeting. Several options are on the table, including attending a plenary session, a meeting with the conference of the presidents of the groups, or a face-to-face meeting with Schulz.

Schulz has been given a mandate to contact Cameron to pass on the conference's wish to invite him to the EP and to see whether he would be interested, an EP spokesperson explained. It is on the strength of this mandate that Schulz will discuss the timetable and format of such a visit with Cameron. (Solenn Paulic with Elodie Lamer)
