03/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU mobilises €300,000 humanitarian aid for Erika victims. On Wednesday 2 September, the European Commission decided to grant €300,000 in emergency aid to the victims of tropical storm Erika, which ravaged the small island of Dominica in the Caribbean last week. The aid will focus on the urgent needs of the people - restoring access to basic health services, medical care, drinking water, hygiene, sanitation, waste management and disease prevention. Erika's toll has been very heavy. The storm has claimed at least 20 lives and several people are still reported missing. Some communities are isolated due to the destruction of communication systems and transport infrastructure. European aid will be channelled by the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO), one of ECHO's partners on the ground, in collaboration with the UK's Department for International Development. (AN)
