Brussels, 24/08/2015 (Agence Europe) - At the request of the authorities in Burkina Faso, the EU is to observe the parliamentary and presidential elections there on 11 October and to provide support for the electoral process.
On Thursday 20 August, the European Commission confirmed this while announcing the provision of €60 million in direct budgetary funding for Burkina Faso's government to support political, economic and social stability ahead of the elections.
“This financial support aims to consolidate the country's democratic achievements. We thus confirm our trust in the conduct of the transition led by President Kafando and in his commitment to holding elections on the date planned”, said European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica (our translation).
During his meeting with Michel Kafando in Brussels in June, Mimica had confirmed extraordinary support for the transition through the provision of €120 million for 2015 and 2016.
Since November 2014, the European Union has supported the transition in Burkina Faso, both on the political level and financially, in coordination with the international and inter-African bodies. (Aminata Niang)
