21/08/2015 (Agence Europe) - Cross border inheritance regulation in force. European Regulation 650/2012, which aims to facilitate cross border inheritance, came into force on Friday 17 August, the European Commission stated the same day. Under this regulation, which was adopted in July 2012 (see EUROPE 10630 and 10573), European citizens can choose the law of the country of their nationality for their succession even if they live in another member state and hold assets in different countries. Cross border inheritance involves around 450,000 European families annually. The regulation also introduces a European Certificate of Succession which will enable heirs and administrators to prove their status and exercise their rights and powers across the European Union. The regulation is applicable in all EU member states except the UK, Ireland and Denmark. (SP)
