Referendum upsets session agenda

Strasbourg, 06/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 July, the European Parliament will resemble an echo chamber for the plethora of responses to the results from the referendum in Greece. The plenary session agenda has been amended in order to take into account the European level meetings taking place on Tuesday, including the eurozone and Eurogroup Summit.

Initially, a debate had been planned on Tuesday on the results from the most recent European Council. A decision was made to hold a debate on Wednesday around 10.30 am, with Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk, the respective presidents of the European Commission and European Council, on the results from the Greek referendum and the results from the most recent European Council.

On Tuesday morning, there will be a debate on the results from the Latvian Presidency, which will be dominated by the reactions from Juncker, the Latvian Prime Minister, Laimdota Straujuma and the presidents from the EP political groups, regarding the vote in Greece. On Tuesday afternoon, there will also be a debate on the Commission's work programme for 2016.

The plenary supported Verhofstadt's (ALDE, Belgium) proposal to invite both Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the president of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, to discuss the crisis in Greece. European Parliament President Martin Schulz will therefore invite both men to the debate. (Lionel Changeur)
