11/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU increases its budgetary support to government. The EU is to mobilise €120 million in order to strengthen its support to the transition government of Burkina Faso. The agreement for this amount of direct budgetary support for an 18-month period was signed in Brussels on Thursday 11 June. The support, financed by the European Development Fund (11th EDF), will guarantee additional funding for the state budget - which is in deficit in 2015. The funding will be especially useful for maintaining basic public services for the country's population and for organising the elections. “The European Union is fully committed to working with the transitional authorities and President Michel Kafando to help strengthen democracy and ensure stability and the necessary conditions for credible and inclusive elections”, said European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica. The EU's budgetary support was set up after the popular uprising in Burkina Faso at the end of 2014. (AN)
