08/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - Complaint at Karlsruhe Court on European quantitative easing. On Monday 8 June, French newspaper Les Echos reported that a complaint was lodged in May with the German Constitutional Court of Karlsruhe concerning the validity of the European Central Bank's (ECB) operation of redeeming public and private securities (quantitative easing or QE). According to the complainants, by launching QE the ECB has allegedly gone beyond its mandate relating to the level of inflation, and its decision is allegedly undemocratic. On Tuesday 16 June, the Court of Justice of the EU will return a much awaited judgment on the compatibility with the European treaties of outright monetary transactions (OMT) providing for the redemption of securities from the eurozone countries that are in difficulty (see EUROPE 11230). Although the ECB has already redeemed €159.6 billion of public securities by way of QE, the OMT operation has never been activated. (MB)
