Brussels, 08/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - To celebrate World Oceans Day, which takes place every year on 8 June, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) held a conference on Monday 8 June on the role of the oceans in the climate system.
The day was opened by UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and the Swedish government's Ambassador for Oceans, Seas and Fresh Water Lisa Emelia Svensson. The European Commission highlights the consultation that it has just opened on the governance of the oceans (see EUROPE 11328) and the circular economy strategy (see EUROPE 11324) due to be presented very shortly (one of the goals of which is to address the issue of marine waste in the oceans).
The main recommendations of World Oceans Day will be sent to stakeholders taking part in the Bonn conference on climate change, in preparation for COP 21 (Paris Climate Conference 2015). (Lionel Changeur)
