29/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - Europeans hail abolition of death penalty in Nebraska. On Thursday 28 May, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that the abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska (USA) was “a historic step” by the Nebraska Parliament. “The European Union opposes the death penalty and will continue - in all international fora - to promote and support the abolition of such cruel punishment, for the enhancement of human dignity”, she added. The general rapporteur from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on abolishing the death penalty, Marietta Karamanli, also welcomed Nebraska's decision. “I have good trust that this latest step will encourage parliamentarians from other [US] states to follow this excellent example”, she said. Nebraska is the 19th of 50 US states to abolish the death penalty. It has not executed any convicted person since 1997. (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
