EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / (ae) digital

Commission presents its digital strategy to Parliament

Brussels, 19/05/2015 (Agence Europe) - At Tuesday morning's plenary session on 19 May, Members of the European Parliament examined the strategy proposed by the European Commission for the single digital market. This included a presentation of the strategy by the vice president responsible for this field, Andrus Ansip (see EUROPE 11309).

The strategy includes measures to improve consumers and companies' access to digital goods and services in Europe and create appropriate conditions and a level playing field for the digital networks and innovative services, so that the growth in the European digital economy can be optimised. The European Parliament will respond to the Commission's proposal with an own initiative report that will be prepared by several different committees, such as those responsible for industry, the single market, culture and legal affairs.

The single digital market will also be on the European Council meeting agenda on 25-26 June. The Commission has announced that it will be carrying out studies in this connection and will present the legislative proposals required for this strategy by the end of 2016. EUROPE will be returning to the debate at the EP on this subject at a later date. (Isabelle Lamberty)
