Local authorities declare themselves 'TTIP-free'

Brussels, 09/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - Marc Tarabella, a Belgian PS MEP and Mayor of Anthisnes, has welcomed his town's adoption of a symbolic motion declaring itself “TTIP-free”. This is a “way of echoing the growing concern generated by this treaty, which is surrounded by the greatest possible opacity. It is time to put the interests of the citizen back at the centre of the debate, rather than just those of multinationals”, he said (our translation).

A number of other municipalities had already voted through similar motions, in France and Belgium. In Belgium, there are 52 of them, according to the Belgian Association Les Amis de la Terre. In France, this number is 254, Tarabella stated. According to the French collective StopTafta, 15 regions and 14 departments of France have done the same. These include Brittany, Île-de-France, Seine-Saint-Denis and Deux-Sèvres. (Jean Comte)
