Brussels, 24/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - MEPs have updated their position on the reregistration of vehicles in the EU, in the hope that it could help to encourage the Council of EU to get back to the negotiating table. They deleted the request for standardising the colour of car number plates.
In Dita Charanzova's report (ALDE, Czech Republic) adopted on Tuesday 24 February, MEPs from the internal market committee retained the proposal of a previous term committee to set a three-month deadline for citizens to re-register their vehicles when moving their normal residence to a different EU member state (deadline of 30 days in online registration applications). The Council requested this formal position before moving forward in the process for adopting the simplification regulation. The same parliamentary committee adopted a preliminary position before the end of the previous European Parliament mandate (see EUROPE 11042). This first report was controversial mainly because of an amendment calling on the European Commission to examine the possibility of introducing a standard car number plate colour. This provision was removed from the 'Charanzova' report and was adopted by a comfortable majority (26 votes for, 1 against, with 9 abstentions). By demonstrating its goodwill, the EP is hoping that the Council will agree to begin trialogue negotiations on the subject. (Marie-Pauline Desset)
