Future of Commissioner Avramopoulos by Tuesday

Brussels, 16/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - Greek Prime minister Alexis Tsipras decided on Sunday 15 February to delay his decision on the choice of the candidate for the presidency of the Greek Republic, Greek media have reported. Current Immigration and Internal Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos, a member of the EPP family, has been spoken of as one of the favourites but reservations have been expressed within the prime minister's Syriza party.

Avramopoulos' future is likely to be decided on Tuesday 17 February, following the outcome of the Eurogroup in Brussels on Monday evening, the Greek media have indicated, reporting the spokesperson for the Greek government. Voting on the presidency of the Republic will begin straight away on Wednesday. Were Avramopoulos to leave the Commission, the Greek media are highlighting the names of Dimitrios Papadimoulis MEP and economist Yiannis Milios, both members of Syriza, as possible successors.
