Brussels, 10/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 10 February, more than 100 countries in the world celebrated Safer Internet Day, an annual event organised by the European Commission to promote a better Internet for young people.
Children need quality content to stimulate the imagination and help them study, explained Andrus Ansip, Commission vice-president for the digital market, but they also need tools and skills to surf the Internet in complete safety. Ansip said: “We all have a role to play to make the Internet a safer and better place, particularly for young people”
This year Safer Internet Day is proposing that: 1) a reflection exercise is carried out on what a “better” Internet should be for young people; 2) ways of devising a safer, freer, appropriately framed online area is examined, which is rich in content, egalitarian and participatory; 3) all constructive digital initiatives are promoted to help create a better digital universe for young people. On this occasion, the Commission also published a Eurobarometer survey on cyber security, which illustrated that 85% of people are concerned by cybercrime, 9% more than in 2013. (Isabelle Lamberty)
