Idea of European tollbooth system resurfaces

Brussels, 28/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, has discussed her vision for a comprehensive tollbooth system in Europe. She actually made this announcement to the German press, in a backdrop to her meeting with the German minister, Alexander Dobrindt, on the subject of the German vignette project, on Tuesday 27 January.

Speaking the same day, on Twitter, she shared her vision for a uniform European tollbooth system. She said that this mechanism “would be fairer and more efficient for European citizens” but would be optional for member states. In an interview to the German Die Welt newspaper, published the previous day, the commissioner also explained that developing a data network would enable us to calculate the number of kilometres and roads in Europe driven by a driver. She said that this could “perhaps be the basis for a new distance-based tolling system”. One source close to the Commissioner, however, explained that a uniform tolling system is a very long-term vision and is not part of the current work being undertaken for a legislative proposal.
