ENISA report on cyber security in financial sector

Brussels, 15/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 15 January, ENISA published two reports - one on network security for the financial sector, and the other on what measures to take following cyber threats throughout the network infrastructure in 2014.

Network security in the financial sector. The study shows that large international banking groups demonstrate a good understanding of the risk landscape and the available security schemes. Many banks have introduced enhanced good practice especially in the area of IT governance, while medium-sized stakeholders demonstrate limited top management involvement in the field, explains the report. The report analyses and compares information security obligations in the financial sector in the majority of the EU's 28 member states, in an effort to create a more transparent picture of what priorities should be introduced in the future. It also compares the different national approaches to network supervision. ENISA illustrates three objectives it would like attained: (1) more convergence in network supervision practices; (2) clear guidelines on network compliance and best practice; (3) more proactive cooperation between stakeholders on the challenges created by network security.

Cyber threats in 2014. This report draws up an overview of the existing network infrastructure and identifies cyber threats that endanger the network and that are, according to ENISA, increasing. The authors of the report formulate five technical recommendations and four recommendations on network organisation, in an effort to help internet infrastructure owners and cyber security experts better protect network infrastructure and increase the levels of security. The report also provides all the different existing examples of good practice which encourage stakeholders to collaborate with each other more. (IL)
