Brussels, 12/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 12 January, the European Commission opened a public consultation to take stock of the opinions on the Lamy report recommendations on radio frequency. This report was presented on 1 September 2014 and calls for a long-term political strategy for using the future UHF waveband (470-790 MHz), so that citizens can have unhindered access to the new digital services that are particularly well suited to this waveband.
The Commission is hoping that a significant number of citizens, consumers and organisations respond to this public consultation, which is open until 12 April 2015, because any future developments in UHF waveband use will have an impact on the quantity and quality of radio broadcast and mobile services. The Commission also said that the introduction of new equipment standards (such as televisions) might also be required. The questionnaire also includes a specific section for individual citizens.
The report from the former European Commissioner, Pascal Lamy, examines the best ways of distributing the 470-790 MHz (megahertz) wavebands between digital television and mobile telecommunications operators and avoid any negative impact on the former (which until now, have exclusively occupied this section of Spectrum radio) and contain the latter, who are increasingly orientating their mobile services towards the audio-visual market (see EUROPE 11145). It should be pointed out that a balanced and effective spectrum radio policy is one of the goals the Commission set itself in its “Connected Continent” strategy. (IL)
