Brussels, 09/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - During the evening of Thursday 8 January, the EU condemned the fresh attacks carried out by Islamist group Boko Haram in villages of North Eastern Nigeria (Baga and its surroundings). The attacks resulted in a heavy loss in human life.
“The renewed attacks in North Eastern Nigeria are another expression of terrorism targeting innocent people. They have led to the destruction of at least 16 villages and reportedly killed hundreds of people, displacing thousands”, said High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. She added that the issue of Boko Haram insurgency had been discussed at the recent EU-Nigeria ministerial dialogue in Abuja on 27 November (see EUROPE 11203) and that it will also be addressed at the next regional security conference, to be held in Niamey (Niger) on 20 January.
Mogherini gave assurances that the EU would continue to provide political, development and humanitarian support “to Nigeria and its people in tackling this threat and in ensuring the sound development of the country”. (AN)
