Brussels, 25/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - Ministers of culture want to promote active participation in cultural heritage. On Tuesday 25 November, they adopted conclusions for a “participative governance of cultural heritage” in which they call on member states to promote the participation of civil society and the private sector in the governance of cultural heritage at local, regional, national and European levels.
This method of governance should “raise public awareness about cultural heritage and the values it represents, strengthen transparency and the obligation to provide accountability with regard to the use of public resources and help increase trust between citizens and the public authorities”. The Council also emphasises that digital heritage can help to update innovative services, such as the online Europeana library. The conclusions also examine the possible synergies between the culture and tourism sectors, particularly with regard to providing a sustainable cultural tourism industry and the right balance between economic perspectives and the well-being of citizens.
European heritage is one of the four priorities in the new work programme on culture, which was also adopted during this work session (see other article). (IL)
