Brussels, 29/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The very first European Sustainable Development Week - an initiative of Austria, France and Germany - will take place from 30 May until 5 June 2015 and will coincide with European Green Week.
The three delegations used the opportunity of the Environment Council in Luxembourg on Tuesday 28 October to invite all EU member states and institutions to become involved. The matter was listed in the agenda simply as a point for information on an initiative that seeks to give visibility to the host of projects and players involved in sustainable development at local, national and international levels and to create synergies with the European Green Week organised every year by the Commission. The move was welcomed by the Commission. Finland announced that it will be joining the initiative.
The idea of a European sustainable development week was raised in the European sustainable development network that was established in 2002 and brings together the sustainability experts from the competent ministries in all 28 member states of the EU. National sustainable development days and weeks have been held in France since 2003, Germany since 2012 and Austria since 2013. (AN)
