Brussels, 27/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 24 October, the EU heads of state and government called for the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova on 30 November to be “free and fair”. In the conclusions from the European Council, the EU heads of state and government say that they expect the Moldovan authorities to ensure these elections are free and fair, and they recommend that the authorities work “closely” with international electoral observers. “All political forces should carry out an open and fair electoral campaign”, the Council states.
The European Council stated that the holding of the elections was “another important step on the European agenda” of the country, following the recent provisional application of the association agreement between the EU and Moldova. On 2 July, the Republic of Moldova ratified the association agreement with the EU, five days after it was signed in Brussels on 27 June. The European Parliament is expected to ratify the agreement in the coming weeks. (CG)
