20/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU concerned about fate of Asia Bibi. “Saddened and deeply concerned” by the decision of the High Court of Lahore (Pakistan) to uphold the conviction of Asia Bibi, who was sentenced to death for blasphemy, the European Union hopes that the verdict will be appealed to the Supreme Court. “The EU considers the death penalty a cruel and inhumane punishment”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. “We call on Pakistan to ensure for all its citizens full respect of human rights as guaranteed by international conventions to which it is party”, Ashton's spokesperson added. Bibi was sentenced to death in 2010 for blasphemy against the prophet Muhammad, but Bibi denies this. Her lawyers have pledged to take the case to the Supreme Court. (CG)
