Brussels, 29/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 29 September, the International Migrants Organisation (IMO) confirmed that more than 3,000 migrants (3,072 to be precise) have lost their lives in the Mediterranean since the beginning of the year. Across the globe, a total of 4,077 people have perished, which makes the Mediterranean Sea the most dangerous place for migrants. This number is more than double the peak in deaths at sea observed in 2011 when the Arab Spring was at its height. Since 2000, more than 22,000 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean. According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, 130,000 people have arrived in Europe by sea since 1 January, already double the amount throughout the whole of 2013. The majority of migrants arriving are Syrians and Eritreans. (SP)
