EU and finance agencies at Tunisia's bedside

Brussels, 03/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - The donors' conference for Tunisia will take place on 8 September. This is now known as the “Invest in Tunisia Start-up Democracy” conference. The European institutions taking part in it include the European Investment Bank.

The idea was launched last April by the French minister for foreign affairs, Laurent Fabius and his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during a joint visit to Tunis.

A preparatory meeting took place on 1 September in the Tunisian capital. Several international organisations, including the private sector, demonstrated an interest in this conference, according to different Tunisian sources. Several local media sources indicated that “140 political figures and business leaders from Tunisia and abroad” attended, as well as “the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), l'Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the German Reconstruction Funding Institute, Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the International South Korean Agency for International Cooperation” (our translation).

This preparatory meeting disclosed that 22 projects worth a total estimated cost of 5,734 million dinars (€2,606 million) would receive financial backing.

A Tunisian-US investment conference with similar goals will take place in November. (FB)
