Brussels, 03/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - European Digital Strategy Commissioner Neelie Kroes is currently taking part in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) being held in Istanbul from 2 to 5 September. Before the international community, she will defend the EU position on internet governance (see EUROPE 11040), after the US government in February announced reform of ICANN, the body responsible for internet management. The commissioner's goals are to: 1) support and encourage the model comprising several stakeholders in internet governance, granting a major role to decisions taken in the IGF; 2) actively contribute to the further evolution and improvement of IGF, particularly the need for sustainable financing; 3) influence discussions on the expected changes to the US government's role in internet governance; 4) highlight areas of improvement in today's internet governance arrangements, especially ICANN's accountability and transparency; 5) press the Turkish government and other stakeholders on the need to respect media freedom and pluralism in Turkey.
