Brussels, 01/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Just as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) had done, the European Union called on all parties in Yemen on Saturday 30 August to join forces to implement the outcomes of the national dialogue immediately. Welcoming the UNSC presidential statement, the EU said it shared the UNSC “concern” about the escalation of tension in Yemen, and the EU urged all parties “to refrain from provocations”. Since March, Shi'ite rebels have multiplied their attacks against the army, and attacks led or sponsored by Al-Quaeda have increased. Over the weekend, 21 people died in armed clashes between Shi'ite rebels and pro-government tribesmen in the north of Yemen.
The European External Action Service (EEAS) said that the UNSC statement was “a clear signal that violence cannot and will not be tolerated in Yemen”, and showed its continuous support of the international community for Yemen's political transition. The UNSC statement also calls on all member states to refrain from any interference that aims to stir up the conflict and worsen the instability, and to support instead the political transition.
In addition, the EEAS commended Yemen's President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi for his recent decisions to address the situation, “specifically measures for the most vulnerable”. Negotiations for a way out of the crisis ended in failure on 24 August. (CG)
