Brussels, 01/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 30 August, the European leaders condemned the violence in Libya and called for a government to be formed. Strongly condemning the escalation in fighting, the European Council called on all parties in Libya to accept an “immediate” ceasefire, to put an end to the suffering of the population, and “to engage constructively in an inclusive political dialogue”. “In this regard”, the Council “fully supports the efforts of the UN mission in Libya”, the European Council conclusions state.
The European leaders also called on Libya's interim government and its House of Representatives “urgently” to establish a “truly inclusive government capable of addressing the needs of the Libyan people”. They encouraged the assembly in charge of drafting the constitution to “pursue as a matter of urgency” its work on a constitutional text that enshrines and protects the rights of all Libyans. The legitimacy of the House of Representatives is contested by the Islamists.
The European Council also encouraged Libya's neighbouring countries and countries of the region “to support an immediate cessation of hostilities and to refrain from actions which might exacerbate current divisions and undermine Libya's democratic transition”. (CG)
