Now S&D MEPs threaten not to support Juncker college

Brussels, 27/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Following the Liberals and Democrats, it is the Socialist family at the European Parliament that announced on Wednesday 27 August - through its leader, Gianni Pittella - that it would not support a Juncker Commission composed of fewer women than the current team, which includes nine women. At the present time, only four women have been officially nominated by their government - although four countries (Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia and the Netherlands) have still not made their choice and could also send women. In addition, Pittella is concerned about the political imbalance of the Commission - where the EPP family is particularly well represented. This does not reflect the commitments made by Juncker at the time of his election to progressive change, Pittella states. Meanwhile, Belgian Socialist MEP Marie Arena threatens: “If the Commission is so little the reflection of society and does not set up rules to reach gender equality, we will call on all MEPs to vote against the investiture of this new college of the 28”.
