Lack-lustre growth in second quarter of 2014

Brussels, 19/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Seasonally-corrected gross domestic product (GDP) growth remained unchanged in the eurozone and rose by 0.2% in the EU in the second quarter of 2014 compared with the first quarter, according to flash estimates released by the European Union's statistics office, Eurostat.

Four member states saw a fall in GDP over this period, namely Romania (-1%), Cyprus (-0.3%), Germany (-0.2%) and Italy (-0.2%). GDP remained unchanged in France and the Czech Republic. It rose the fastest in Latvia (+1%), Hungary and the United Kingdom (both +0.8%) and Lithuania (+0.7%). Data was not available for Denmark, Ireland, Greece, Croatia, Luxembourg, Malta and Slovenia. In the first quarter of this year, GDP grew by 0.2% in the eurozone and 0.3% in the EU28.

By comparison, GDP rose by 1% in the United States and fell by 1.7% in Japan in the second quarter compared with the first quarter of 2014. (MB)
