25/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for moratorium on capital punishment. On Thursday 24 July, the European Union deeply regretted the executions of Foong Chee Peng and Tang Hai Liang, who were convicted of drug trafficking. “These executions ended the unofficial extension of the moratorium which was in place between July 2011 and December 2012”, said a spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. Reiterating that the EU is opposed to capital punishment, Asthon's spokesperon called on the authorities of Singapore to reinstate a moratorium on executions as a first step towards the universal abolition of the death penalty, in line with global developments. Tang Hai Liang and Foo Chee Peng, both from Singapore and aged 36 and 48, were executed on 18 July, having been convicted of trafficking pure heroine. (CG)
