Brussels, 13/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The EU held a workshop on “capacity building” in waste management, in Algiers from 8 to 12 June.
The aim, according to an official European source, was to “develop the skills of the participants for a strategic and creative reflection with a view to allowing them to spread the message and help to make progress towards a society of recycling in the country”.
“Most of the countries in the region have moved, or are in the process of moving, away from uncontrolled landfill to controlled engineered and sanitary landfill”. The same European source added: “It should be possible to achieve fairly quickly (by 2025) a composting/recycling rate of between 20 and 50%, with all of the economic, environmental and social advantages which accompany a change of this kind”.
