While awaiting EU offer on fruit and vegetables

Brussels, 10/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - One of the first visits abroad of Prince Felipe of Spain will be to Morocco, according to an announcement made on Thursday 5 June by a spokesperson for the Spanish royal household and reported in the media.

This visit, to take place “soon”, will be a political gesture in the context of the currently difficult Euro-Moroccan relations of which Spain is bearing the brunt. Spanish fishermen are awaiting the entry into force of the specific agreement, their fishing activities having been on hold for more than a year. Farmers are attentively watching the negotiations unfurl on the subject of Community market access to fruit and vegetables, which has upset their Moroccan competitors.

Euro-Moroccan technical talks again took place in Brussels on 5 May, according to Moroccan sources. The meeting was eagerly awaited by those working in the sector in Morocco and according to the newspaper, “Aujourd'hui le Maroc”, quoting direct sources, they are, “prepared for action”.

A European offer has been requested and, according to one of these sources, “if the Europeans do not put forward a valid offer, all the various operators affected will be obliged to resort to appropriate legal proceedings to defend the sector”. (FB)
