10/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU does not recognise elections in South Ossetia. On 8 June, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton recalled that “the European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework” within which the parliamentary elections in the breakaway region of South Ossetia (Georgia) took place the same day. “The European Union supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as recognised by international law”, Ashton's spokesperson stated. The Unity Party, which advocates Russia's annexation of the separatist region, won the elections with 43.10% of the vote. The turnout rate for the elections was 60.14%. Georgia considers this ballot illegal. (CG)
