13/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - Turkey ordered to pay Cyprus €90 million. On Monday 12 May, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ordered Turkey to pay the Cypriots €90 million in compensation following the Turkish military intervention of 1974 in the division of the island. The ECHR awarded €30 million to the families of the 1,456 people who disappeared from the north of the island, and €60 million to the Greek Cypriots enclaved in the Karpas peninsula, to the north of the island. These people, the court argues, are victims of “degrading discrimination”. The sums of money will be distributed personally. The decision adds to the court's ruling of 10 May 2001 in which Turkey was found guilty of “massive and continuing” human rights violations following the Turkish military operations of 1974 and the division of the island. The money will be distributed to the individual victims by the government of Cyprus. (CG)
