30/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - Moldova sees itself in EU in 2019. On Tuesday 29 April, Moldova's Prime Minister Iurie Leanca announced that his country would like to become a member of the EU by 2019. “We have identified an ambitious objective, but I believe it's achievable: to do everything possible for Moldova to become a full member of the European Union when Romania holds the Presidency of the EU in 2019”, he said, during a visit to the border between Romania and Moldova. Romania will hold the rotating presidency of the EU Council of Ministers from 1 July until 31 December 2019. Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said he hoped that in 2019 there would “no longer be a border in this place [between Romania and Moldova] but a single Europe”. While Moldovan citizens have been able to travel visa-free in the Schengen area since 28 April and while Moldova is due to sign an association agreement with the EU in June, it has not yet officially made a request for accession to the EU.
