Brussels, 23/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - According to a statement by the European Commission on 23 April, researchers in the “Graphene” project, one of the Future and Emerging Technologies flagship projects (FET Flagships) in Dublin have reached a new stage in their work by devising a new process for the massive delivery of Graphene-based materials. Graphene is a revolutionary carbon-based material that provides an extraordinary combination of physical and chemical properties. It is an extremely thin material and conducts electricity much better than copper. It is 100-300 times stronger than steel and has unique optical properties. The mass production method for manufacturing Graphene is expected to be simple and low cost. It could be used in industry for hi-tech applications, particularly for the production of very high quality batteries. The “Graphene” project will receive funding of €1 billion over a ten-year period. €500 million will be provided by the Commission (see EUROPE 10773). (IL)
