07/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - Shipwreck of the Luno. The Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPRM) and the European foundation Surf Rider are refusing to allow the accident involving the Spanish cargo ship, Luno, off the Basque coast in France on Wednesday 5 February to be played down. Although there were no victims and all risk of oil pollution was avoided, the two associations stress the importance of tightening up the rules on protection, prevention and coordination still further. In the view of CPRM President Annika Annerby Jansson, this accident is indeed proof that “zero-risk does not exist”. Pending the results of the investigation into the shipwreck, she has called for the “practices and rules aiming to protect sailors, economic players, maritime and coastal regions and the environment to be continually reinforced, at international and European levels”.
