Brussels, 23/01/2014 (Agence Europe) -MEPs on the European Parliament's internal market committee want it to take no more than three months to register a car in another member state, and agreed on Thursday 23 January on a negotiating mandate for Toine Manders (ADLE, the Netherlands) on a European Commission proposal to simplify the registration of vehicles moved from one member state to another. The MEPs recommend mutual recognition of member states' roadworthiness tests, and arranging the e-registration of transferred vehicles. Such simplifications could save up to €1.5 billion a year. In order to prevent the illegal transfer of vehicles, the MEPs call for greater cooperation among the member states through the car and driving licence database EUCARIS, that is already in place in a number of countries. Negotiations are expected to start soon between the EU institutions with a view to agreement in first reading. (MD/transl.fl)
