Brussels, 12/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - “Med-TSO”, the association of Mediterranean Transmission System Operators of 17 Mediterranean rim countries, presented, on Wednesday 11 December, a proposal for “electricity systems integration” of the whole area. The aim is to better face the challenge of the surge in electricity consumption, estimated at nearly 90,000 MW. Production foreseen would be around 150,000 MW, of which 10% should be ensured by renewable sources. Investment of €220 to €250 billion in new production installations would be required.
Strengthened technical cooperation is needed as well as the development of interconnection infrastructure between all the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area, including Israel and Palestine. According to Med-TSO, this, as a whole, should form a “concrete instrument” for linking all those countries and, in addition to the technical ambition behind it, the effort of cooperation will above all contribute to building a common future.
