JEF-Europe calls on Kiev to review its decision

Brussels, 27/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 27 November, the association of Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) called on the Ukrainian government to revise its decision to suspend preparations for the association agreement. “Although we understand the delicate geopolitical situation of the country especially with regards to economic policies, it is our sincere belief that this decision creates more issues on European soil than it resolves”, says Ivana Jordanovska, member of the executive board of JEF-Europe. JEF-Europe argues that the Ukrainian government is putting its short-term economic interests first, rather than the real interests of its citizens. “Ukraine's future is European”, stressed President of JEF-Europe Pauline Gessant. The Young European Federalists also lent their support to pro-European demonstrations in Ukraine, hoping that their voices will have a “meaningful effect” on future decisions of the Ukrainian institutions, and spoke out in the strongest possible terms against clashes at the demonstrations. Gessant went on to urge the EU and Ukraine to “aim for the establishment of a comprehensive, strong and equal partnership, based on democratic values and mutual respect, with the common goal of a peaceful and prosperous future for the European continent”.
