Need for “massive support” from Europe

Brussels, 08/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - Tunisia needs “massive support” from the EU to bring it out of its political crisis and to combat terrorism. The leader of the democratic opposition, Beji Caïd Essebsi, who was the transition prime minister before elections in October 2011, set out his request at a conference in Paris this week. He felt that European partners have been lacking in their support.

Representing his country at the high-level G8 meeting in Deauville, Caïd Essebsi said: “We had been promised $25 billion over five years. Tunisia has received nothing”. Donors highlight how difficult it is to take on more projects in a country where consumer capacity is affected by the general political climate and by the serious threats to security. The political situation is currently in deadlock. Tunisia, Caïd Essebsi said, needs support in its fight against terrorism. He went on to add that the Jihadists are better armed than the Tunisian security forces. (FB/transl.jl)
