Liberals seeking to form coalition

Brussels, 28/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - As was suspected for several days, the new coalition government in Luxembourg will not include the party of outgoing prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker, the Social Christians. On Friday 25 October, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg announced that he had asked the head of the liberals, Xavier Bettel, to form a new government. Bettel's party won thirteen seats in the electrons and had earlier expressed a desire to form a government with the Greens and the Socialists (LSAP). Together, the three parties would hold a slight majority of 32 (of the 60 seats). Juncker explained at a press conference after the European Summit in Brussels on Friday that he had no intention of withdrawing from Luxembourg politics, but refused to comment on the situation and the Grand Duke's decision. Juncker has been prime minister of Luxembourg for nearly 19 years. His political party won 23 seats. (EL/transl.fl)
