Brussels, 18/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama and Foreign Affairs Minister Ditmir Bushati have welcomed the analysis of the European Commission's progress report on Albania, published on 16 October (see EUROPE 10944), and the “clear recommendation to grant the candidate status” to their country. “However, there is no time for celebrations and merits sharing, but to be prepared and concentrated for the work ahead”, said Rama, adding that the reforms will continue up until “follow-up of the procedures in the working group and line ministries”. He said that this is the right time for the majority and opposition to work together.
Bushati described the report as an “objective, clear and accurate reflection” of the state of fulfilment of the reforms related to the 12 key priorities set by the EU, as well as areas where further progress is needed. In his opinion, the recommendation to grant candidate status is “a recognition of the efforts and achievements” of Albania. He said he is fully confident that this progress will be assessed by the Council in December, which will discuss granting this candidate status. Bushati reiterated the commitment and resolve of the government to consolidate the progress made until now and to find the means to make the common agenda of all Albanians move forwards, while continuing to accomplish the key reforms identified in the report so as to enable the opening of accession negotiations.
