Agreement on adapting trade agreement

Brussels, 16/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 15 October, the European Commission hailed “the constructive position of Serbia on the adaptation of the EU-Serbia trade agreement”, with a view to adapting the trade concessions laid down in the EU-Serbia stabilisation and association agreement (SAA), following Croatia's EU membership on 1 July, announced Peter Stano, the spokesperson for Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle. “The objective of this adaptation of trade concessions under the SAA is to maintain traditional trade flows existing between Croatia and Serbia, until then regulated by the Central European free trade agreement. It does not imply any further liberalisation of trade but only aims at maintaining the status quo for all parties concerned”, he said. The negotiations, at Serbia's request, to increase it export quota of sugar to the EU could soon be launched. Similarly, cigarette exports from Croatia to Serbia, and the maintenance of measures on the traditional trade in cigarettes have been accepted. (CG/transl.fl)
