23/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - EU and UN are partners for the MDG and beyond. Between 2004 and 2012, EU funding for the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) enabled 14 million pupils to be educated at primary school, over 46 million people to be assured food, and 7.5 million women to give birth with the necessary medical assistance, according to data published by the European Commission on 23 September. This publication coincides with the opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expects progress on the agenda proposed for the post-2015 development framework. President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs will reiterate the EU's determination to contribute to the achievement of the MDG by 2015 and to aim for more - “the eradication of the poverty of a generation is possible”, Barroso stated on Monday (our translation).
