Füle has little hope of initialling association agreement

Brussels, 09/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting with Armenian Foreign Affairs Minister Edward Nalbandian on 5 September, Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle stressed that, due to Armenia's announcement of its intentions to join the customs union with Russia (see EUROPE 10914), it is “difficult to imagine the initialling at the Vilnius summit (of the Eastern Partnership) in November of the Association Agreement with Armenia as it has been negotiated”. Based on the “information we presently have, the compatibility of obligations to the customs union with those under an Association Agreement/DCFTA with the EU looks problematic”, he added. Füle explained that the Commission was continuing its assessment of the situation, consulting the partners and member states. For his part, Nalbandian explained that his country wishes to continue to develop a broad and deep partnership with the EU which at the same time does not contradict Armenia's accession to the customs union.
