Conference in Vilnius on internationlisation of universities

Brussels, 05/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 5 September, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou and Lithuania's Minister for Education Dainius Pavalkis inaugurated the European Higher Education in the World conference in Vilnius, which will continue on 6 September. In her opening speech, Vassiliou recalled that Europe should be ready to face competition from other continents by adopting a strategy for the internationalisation of its higher education “because the skills and knowledge acquired in international education are the same skills that graduates need to succeed in the global economy.”, she said. Vassiliou also announced that she would soon present a communication - Opening up Education - which will consider the impact of new technology on educational systems. “The internationality of higher education directly corresponds to the aim of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU - to secure an open and growing Europe”, said Pavalkis.
